Directing | Writing

“Directing was always a passion of mine. Staging a story, a play and making it come alive, creating a real experience for the audience – wether it is developing something brand new or interpreting a classic in an unexpected way. Directing and play development is something I wish to explore and develop much more in the years to come.”

Sarah-Marie Scholz worked a.o. as an Assistant Director to Pascal Wieandt for the Production of ´Schumacher and Adenauer´, as an Assistant Director at the National Theatre Mannheim (Junges Nationaltheater Mannheim) Production of ´Tür zu´ directed by Ariel Doron and Inka Neubert for the Production of ´Der Himmel auf der Haut´.

Sarah-Marie directed three play developments with her own theatre ensemble ´Absprung Theater´ receiving praising reviews – especially for the Production of UnFreiWillIchHier, which included a group of young Syrian Refugees. In 2019 she also directed the reading of her play ´Of Grief and Grace´ at The Fulton Sheen Center in New York.

“At the sold out premiere, at the Forum, you can see young people sitting next to older people, Refugees next to Germans and sponsors next to students. The ensemble has been rehearsing since October, a play that was´nt only supposed to talk about refugees but that integrates them into the play.”
“The Mannheim ensemble Absprung Theater presents, for the third time in a row, the play „UnFreWillIch hier sein“ directed by Marie Scholz, which with a quantum leap in the middle of the story spans the plot to the very present refugee topic….
….the syrian character Salam, tells in an emotional and very sensitive monologe the fate of her people and the results of war, so strongly that the audience had cold shivers running down their spine. The actress brilliantly portraied the suffering of her family and broke down under the heavy weight of her pain. Syrian refugees entered the stage to sing thoughtful songs about love, and the longing of a lost home. The choir of refugees sings the chorus of Motrips song ´Selbstlos´ (Selfless): „We believe in true love. So we close our eyes and dream of a better word. We think of all and everyone and forget ourselves. Because we are selfless.“ Words that linger on the way home”

Review Excerpts

Theatre Ensemble ´Absprung´ thrills its audience

Summer-Magic on an Open Air Stage

Six proud and glowing faces and an even more excited and delighted audience. The members of the theatre ensemble Absprung Theater had every reason to celebrate after the premier of ´Sommernachtszauber´ on the grounds of the Turley Barracks: the success of 4 months of work, an amazing community feeling, a self-written and produced play and all of that for a good cause. It is already the second production of the actress and director Marie Scholz.
„Summernights often have a very special kind of magic“ sais Scholz.
The ensemble Absprung Theater caught this magic in short scenes, that are all set on a summers night – sometimes romantic, sometimes funny, sometimes a tale inspired by fables and legends.
John Irvine a singer/songwriter from Scotland accompanied the scenes soulfully. The enchanting duett with his former fellow student Marie Scholz „Benath Your Beautiful“ received thundering applause.
After a short break the stage was opened for everybody to share their own music or poetry. All the earnings of the show will be given to World Vision to help refugees from Syria.

BERND MAND FOR MANNHEIMER MORGEN

“...It is the possibilty to rediscover and redefine yourself, through the process of making art, of finding new ways to express yourself within a team that supports you and believes in you...

Community Theatre

It is about giving a voice, a stage, an audience to those who feel unseen and unheard.

“This work is an adventure, challenging, confronting and always so worth it. The motivation to start working in that field, was to give back, but what I learned over the years was, that I am the one who receives most of all. Working and creating with people from all different walks of life, cultures, countries, backrounds – opens your eyes, takes you out of your own comfort zone, teaches you to understand, to love so much more.”

Sarah-Marie Scholz has worked with kids, teenagers, young adults from socially challenged backrounds, in Inner City Schools, Youth Welfare Programs, inclusion projects, with refugees and in a prison for male adults.

I would call myself a storyteller, wether I write sing or perform…

…theater, film and music helps us to understand people in a new way, helps us to understand why they make certain decisions, to get to know life in all forms and situations and to delve deeper into the diversity of the human experience. It confronts us, challenges us or simply pulls us out of our everyday life, our worries and difficulties. Art has the opportunity to speak directly to the soul and touch our hearts.
I have no answer as to why I am doing this or when I decided to do so. The longing, the need to be a performer has been with me for as long as I can think. There never really has been anything else for me.
It was never about standing on stage myself, but about disappearing on it. Ultimately, as an artist, it is not about ourselves. We are just the instrument, the tool to create an experience…

Producing

“Life has a way of surprising you and it certainly surprised me, with my work as a producer. I never could have imagined working on so many exciting projects and productions and meeting other artists from all over the world.

I suppose my curiosity on how productions work, wanting to know what was going on in all different departments, wanting to see and understand each puzzle piece and how they all come together to create the whole picture has been a vital part in preparing me for this role and is why I love producing.”

Sarah-Marie Scholz has worked internationally as a producer on a variety of projects from producing live events such as plays and music festivals as well as online events. Marie co-produced a Music festival for the past 5 years touring Germany with international Artists from the US, UK and Europe. She also co-produced an Online Music Festival in 2020. She was also producer of her own theatre ensemble and produced a variety of Community Outreach Projects over the past few years. In 2021 she produced the Virtual Music Series ´Epiphanies of Beauty´ for the Fulton Sheen Center in New York City.
